ETC (Electronic Theatre Controls) is a global leader in entertainment and architectural lighting, dedicated to technical innovation and customer service. ETC manufactures the award-winning Source Four and Selador luminaires; the Congo, Eos and SmartFade families of control; Sensor SCR and Matrix SCR and SineWave dimming; Unison Paradigm, Mosaic and SmartLink architectural controls; Smart Solutions compact lighting equipment; and more.
Selador LED fixtures feature a patented x7 Color System which, by mixing seven different colours of LEDs, produces bright broad-spectrum whites and intense colours equally well, rendering pigments and skin tones in a far more natural way.

The line won a PLASA Award for Innovation in 2009, with the judges praising them for “taking a significant step towards the ultimate goal of energy efficient incandescent replacement lighting.” They continued by pointing out that “ETC has developed this LED fixture with a colour output that gets close to the spectral curve of traditional incandescent source, thereby making LED technology a step closer to wider use in theatres and similar applications.”
Element is ETC’s newest control desk. Aimed at smaller theatrical venues and schools that depend on single desk operators or volunteer staff, it is designed to handle rigs kitted out predominantly with conventional luminaires, while also accommodating some LED fixtures and/or a small number of simple moving lights. The desk is the smaller sibling of the Ion and Eos; all share a similar user interface.
Perfect for house and foyer lighting control, ETC’s Unison Paradigm merges innovative advances in architectural lighting control with ETC’s expertise in entertainment lighting control to give the best of both worlds. With Paradigm, the system can be programmed to enable users to press a button via a wall mounted touch screen or button panel and get the system to manage lighting states for you automatically. Paradigm’s energy management tools capitalise on daylight harvesting, occupancy sensing and time schedules for maximum energy savings.
ETC has its headquarters in Wisconsin, and offices across the US, Europe and the Far East. ETC has more than 700 employees worldwide, including in-house customer and technical service departments offering 24-hour phone support.

SERAPID LINKLIFTS PROVIDE FLEXIBLE THEATER
CONFIGURATIONS FOR VENUES AT THE AT&T PERFORMING ARTS CENTER
SERAPID LinkLift telescopic lift columns provide quick, flexible configurations for a variety of performances at several venues in the AT&T Performing Arts Centre in Dallas. The Margot and Bill Winspear Opera House is home of The Dallas Opera and Texas Ballet Theatre and The Dee and Charles Wyly Theatre is home of the Dallas Theatre Centre and Dallas Black Dance Theatre as well as a number of other performing arts organizations in the Dallas area.
At the Charles Wyly Theatre, the lift columns are incorporated into this truly unique performance space to allow directors to change the configuration of the all-glass, vertically stacked building at the push of a button.
SERAPID’s scope of supply for the 575 seat Potter Rose Theatre inside the Charles Wyly Theatre includes 46 LinkLift lifting columns to support the proscenium lift, seating wagon lift, six seat configuration lifts, six turntables, and 12 seating riser lifts.
Additionally SERAPID provided two push/pull systems for the ‘superfly’ tower, which services the stage level. These systems enable the seating to be lifted or lowered from storage facilities. The Rigid Chain telescopic actuators push/pull these systems in/out of position to be lifted/lowered. One system weighs approximately 54,430 kilograms, and the other weighs 27,215 kilograms. The ‘superfly’ tower is a key component to the rapid reconfiguration of performance areas.
The LinkLift columns at the Winspear Opera House facilitate a quick switch between opera and musical theatre to dance performances.

Winspear Opera House
The lifts in both venues are comprised of SERAPID LinkLift columns, which feature square links that work like building blocks to form a tower stack. The shape and locking technique make it capable of extra-high rigidity and strength.
SERAPID is a leader in stage, orchestra and piano lifts. Their Rigid Chain Lift Columns are installed in theatres, show venues and concert halls all over the world.

Venues for music, dance, opera and theatre are all buildings informed by performance. The space and facilities must perform as well as the artists, from the Royal Opera House in London and the Casa da Musica in Porto, to the National Institute of Circus Arts in Melbourne.
Arup has a long, star-studded track record in the design of performing arts buildings around the world, from the grandest and most historic opera houses, theatres and concert halls to new performing arts venues. We work with our clients across all phases of performing arts projects, providing a comprehensive service which combines traditional design and engineering with specialist services, such as business case planning, acoustics and theatre consulting.
We design elegant, flexible and sustainable venues, helping our clients to create a superb audience and performer experience, and attract ever wider audiences to compete in an increasingly crowded leisure market. Since our ground-breaking work on the Sydney Opera House in the 1960s, our team has developed significant experience in the design and delivery of exemplar projects, as well as an excellent reputation for reconciling the balance of architecture, acoustics and theatrical functionality. In response to the challenge of realising artistic ambition within commercial constraints, our solutions work to reduce the capital and operating costs of venues, where appropriate, as well as optimising their revenue generation potential.
Our team’s expertise and wealth of experience has allowed us to identify new tools and approaches that improve the service and value that we can deliver to our clients. From pioneering Arup’s innovative Soundlab tool which enables clients to ‘listen’ to a proposed building before it is built, to whole-life sustainable venue design and operation, including the first zero-carbon theatre in London, Future Arcola, Arup is the performing arts consultant of choice.

Theatres are a unique type of building, presenting many challenges to a design team. They often include large, open, acoustically sensitive auditoria, technical areas, public spaces and general accommodation, all of which form essential elements of a successful performance.
For our clients the buildings need to be safe and comfortable to work in, secure, economic to run, logically laid out and above all else – flexible. For the public, they must be comfortable, dramatic and capable of delivering an experience beyond expectation.
The design of new theatres, or the modernisation of old, often involves a multitude of skills and differing viewpoints resulting in many constraints and considerations – this is where Buro Happold’s multi-disciplined approach can be of maximum benefit to the client.
In all projects, whether a small studio theatre in a school or a large international auditorium our attention to detail is a fundamental element in ensuring the success of the project. We understand the narrow commercial margins that the arts world must operate under and can offer engineering solutions that reduce the running costs of theatres, performance spaces and the buildings in which they are contained. For example the choice of ventilation system and building fabric can positively affect energy usage for comfort control, and the installation of a sophisticated lighting control system can offer immediate savings against capital outlay.
