Unusual is the UK’s most experienced provider of rigging and stage engineering solutions, with the capacity to support concurrent major international projects and smaller regional projects with equal dedication.

Working principally for the theatre and entertainment industry, our understanding of the needs of the business is second to none. Whether for a West End show or a touring production, an installation for a new theatre or a refurbishment, our skills and knowledge ensure a safe and secure event, on time and within budget.

At our head office in Northampton, we have a six strong CAD team which provides all the detailed design drawings for both project and consultancy work. Particularly detailed projects, such as the 1750 sq m custom tension wire grid supplied this year to Stockholm Waterfront (for which were designed 520 different brackets to accommodate the shape of the auditorium), may require up to 3,000 separate diagrams.

Our engineering department is unique among rigging companies in the UK: here we design and manufacture those special items, such a unique shaped piece of truss, so often required for the theatre. In our electrical department, we manufacture the control systems that accompany the electric hoists. The five acre site also accommodates our warehouse – our rental inventory, which includes some 1500 electric hoists, is probably the biggest of any rigging company in the UK – and two test rigs.

Many of our 80 employees have spent their entire lives working in the production side of the theatre and entertainment business. The specialist teams boast a wide range of disciplines, and all are passionate about what they do. Their ‘can-do’ attitude and reputation for accepting demanding challenges has resulted in Unusual undertaking some of the most interesting and extraordinary projects of the past decade, including two by renowned sculptor Antony Gormley. Theatre clients include The Really Useful Group and Cameron Mackintosh, with shows such as Love Never Dies, Les Miserables, Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, The Sound of Music and Mamma Mia! As well as providing project and consultancy work, Unusual is also a distributor for Prolyte truss systems, Liftket hoists and Doughty Engineering products, equipment that has all been selected for its reliability and fitness for purpose.
